The difference between monofilament, multifilament, single yarn, and multiple yarns

November 24,2022

1. Different concepts:

monofilament: A single filament with a small count made by a single-hole spinneret in the production of chemical fibers. Its fineness is thicker than that of a single filament in a multifilament. The melted synthetic resin is condensed through a thin stream of raw liquid pressed out of the capillary hole of the spinneret. Thicker synthetic monofilaments of 200~300 tex (2~3 British counts) can be used as fishing nets and ropes. Thinner monofilaments can be used as faux bristle filaments. The finer monofilament is generally 1~1.3 tex (450~600 inch), sometimes as fine as 0.6 tex (1000 inch), and can be processed into elastic yarn for making elastic socks, stockings and other textiles and other knitting Taste. Textiles made of monofilament are thin, transparent and have good hand.
Multifilament: A type of chemical fiber filament.
single yarn:  Simply put, the single yarn of textiles is woven with one thread, and the double yarn is 2 yarns woven together.Multi-Ply Yarn: A strand is a thread formed by twisting two or more single yarns.  Its strength and wear resistance are better than single yarn.

2. The complexity in production:

Monofilament: Its fineness is thicker than that of a single filament in a multifilament. The melted synthetic resin is condensed through a thin stream of raw liquid pressed out of the capillary hole of the spinneret. Or spin with a multi-hole spinneret (for example, up to 50 holes), and then wind it into a monofilament bobbin through untwisted drawing and splitting
.Many people will come into contact with polyester monofilament in their lives. Now our domestic production industry is very developed, many materials are produced by ourselves, and the production effect is also very good. Many friends are making some textiles. When buying products, we always choose some high-grade silk threads. These threads are very advantageous in terms of price and quality. When many friends buy some silk threads, they will check whether the product is green or not.
Multifilament: It is a twisted or untwisted bundle of filaments spun from a multi-hole spinneret. Multifilaments composed of multiple monofilaments are softer than monofilaments of the same denier.
Single yarn:  It is a very simple thread.

Multi-plied yarn: The strands are plied and twisted in a certain way to obtain multi-twisted strands, such as double-strand, triple-strand and multi-strand. Mainly used for sewing thread, braided thread or medium-heavy sturdy fabrics.
The most common of the multi-ply yarns is the spandex covered yarn.  Spandex covered yarns are mostly used for knitted fabrics that require high elasticity, and some are used for woven fabrics. They are ideal yarns for high-grade thin wool, hemp fabrics, jacquard double-layer weft knitted fabrics and warp knitted fabrics. Spandex covered yarn can be spun for both thickness and size yarns, most of which are elastic yarns, which are suitable for weaving underwearsuch as swimming suits, ski suits, sports tights, etc.

3. Summary:

In general: monofilament is 1 filament, multifilament is 2 or more, single yarn is 1 ply, and multi-ply yarn is 2 or more.
